Honeymoon in Italy: A Journey to Discover “La Dolce Vita”

Italy is not just a wedding destination; the journey of discovering the country’s most beautiful places continues into the honeymoon, spanning from classic itineraries to hidden gems.

Picture a smiling couple envoying a leisurely drive in a convertible along the winding roads of the Amalfi Coast. It looks like a scene from a movie set in Italy, yet it is simply a photo sent by a couple we recently worked with currently on their honeymoon. We recently bid them farewell after their wedding in Sorrento, and they have now decided to continue their Italian journey. Three days on the coast, three days on Capri, and then off to Rome for a long weekend immersed in history. We carefully curated a selection of boutique hotels and authentic experiences, including a private pasta-making class in Amalfi and a walking food tour through the streets of Rome. Organizing an Italian honeymoon for international clients means offering an authentic perspective on the region, while avoiding mass-tourism clichés. A gondola ride in Venice? Absolutely—but not on the Grand Canal amidst the maritime traffic. A ride at sunset or after dark, navigating through the quieter inner canals, offers a truly romantic and intimate atmosphere. According to recent research by Condé Nast surveying American newlyweds, Italy—along with Spain—remains at the top of the list of dream honeymoon destinations. Italy’s appeal lies in its rich history and culture, geographical diversity and gastronomy, charming accommodations, and unique experiences. As with any ranking, some findings come as little surprise, such as the enduring popularity of the so-called “Big Three”—Venice, Rome, and the Amalfi Coast—which are long-standing favourites in the honeymoon market. Nearly 99% of respondents consider Venice and Rome “essential” destinations for a romantic trip.

Beyond Rome, Venice, and Florence. Couples are increasingly seeking authentic experiences—from cooking classes in Puglia and boat excursions in the Cinque Terre to wine tasting in the Tuscan hills. Every corner of Italy is perfect for a “Dolce Vita” getaway!

The top 5 emerging destinations offer some surprises: Tuscany, particularly for its wine tourism experiences, the Dolomites, for lovers of alpine scenery, Puglia, for its pristine nature and coastal views, Liguria, for the luxury of Portofino and the postcard-perfect landscapes of the Cinque Terre. Yet, the fifth destination—the true rising star of this list—is Sicily, chosen by couples for its crystal-clear waters, historic itineraries, and unique gastronomy. Another key reason for choosing Italy as a honeymoon destination is the opportunity to travel outside the peak season. This reflects a broader trend toward off-peak travel in the wedding and honeymoon sectors. Choosing Italy means finding the perfect destination at any time of the year—particularly during periods with fewer crowds and milder temperatures. Indeed, respondents identified May, June, and September as the most appealing months to visit Italy and avoid the peak-season crowds. Another factor influencing the choice of Italy has little to do with romance: straightforward entry requirements and visa-free access for eligible travellers can make Italy a more convenient choice for international couples; after all, while romance and love are essential, practicality and organization matter too. Finally, we must not forget that couples often choose an Italian honeymoon as an opportunity to arrange a small, romantic elopement or a vow renewal ceremony even when their official wedding has legally taken place elsewhere. It falls to Italian wedding industry professionals to craft an impeccable, intimate event by carefully selecting the perfect setting, décor, music, and other personal details. It may be small-scale—intended only for a select group of guests or, as often happens, just for the couple—but it offers an extra opportunity to experience the *Dolce Vita*. Let’s wrap up with a couple more figures regarding honeymoons in Italy: the average duration is nine to ten days, and the cost might range from €2,500 to €9,000 per couple—confirming that Italy offers a range of honeymoon experiences across different budgets.
